Sounding Sanctuaries is an ongoing event series that brings together sound practitioners to explore ideas of agency, belonging and collectivity through sound and listening. On March 11th the project makes its London debut at Reference Point.

This edition invites Jacob Dwyer and Loma Doom for performances, archival exchange and a discussion of their respective practices and the evocative potentials of sound. Sounding Sanctuaries approaches listening as a generative act – one that fosters connection and meaning. The project provides a space for experimentation, exchange and exploration of the ways sound constitutes our individual and collective worlds, both real and imagined.

Jacob Dwyer is an Amsterdam-based artist using moving image, audio and writing. His audio drama The Devil Museum employs field recordings, soundscapes and writing to construct a narrative that interweaves anecdote and fiction. Through a remapping of personal encounters over time and space, Jacob invites us to consider moments where storytelling and memory blur into the unreal. The Devil Museum debuted at Café Oto (London) in 2022, and was released on vinyl with Mana Records (London). Notes on Devils was subsequently published with Building Fictions (Amsterdam) in 2023. A forthcoming audio drama, Tom’s House, will be released with South of North (Amsterdam) in March. Jacob has performed at spaces including Iklectik (London), Espace Ness (Paris), and OT301 (Amsterdam).

Loma Doom is a sound practitioner and art educator whose work centres on listening as research method, exploring how sonic experiences can inform and transform creative practices. She uses radio and the archive as primary media to explore the role of sound as an agent with potential for storytelling, spatial exploration, sensory engagement and calls to action. Loma Doom holds radio residencies at Stranded FM (Utrecht), Radio Tempo Não Pára (Amsterdam) and Echobox (Amsterdam). She has played the likes of Salon Des Amateurs, Meakusma and Dekmantel, amongst many others.
